RED OAK – The Sidney Cowgirls finished second in Class A and the Shenandoah Fillies third in Class 2A at the Red Oak Lady Tiger Relays, Thursday, April 4.
Sidney junior Maddy Duncan was the top performer of the meet, winning all four of her individual events. She won the long jump at 15 feet, 7 inches, the 100 meter dash in 13.36 seconds, the 200 in 27.64 and the 400 in 1:02.23.
“Maddy had an exceptional night,” Sidney assistant coach Steve Meyer said. “Right now she is ahead of last season.”
Duncan scored 40 of Sidney’s 96 points as the Cowgirls trailed only Southwest Valley’s 113 in the team standings. Griswold and Bedford weren’t far off the Cowgirls taking third and fourth.
Essex took eighth in the Class A team race with 27 points.
Shenandoah was third in a six-team Class AA with 81 points. Glenwood and Creston were well ahead of the Fillies with 184 and 145 points.
Logan Hughes gave the Fillies their only win, tossing the discus 120 feet, 11 inches. Hughes was also second in the shot put with a throw of 36-8.5.
The Fillies scored five more points in the throws with Sara Morales placing fourth in the shot put and Mia Parker sixth in the discus.
Roxy Denton added a second place leap of 4-6 in the high jump. She scratched out at 4-8 due to a knee injury.
The Fillies finished second in three different relays. Alexis Zito, Hadlee Kinghorn, Cassidy Morris and Olivia Stogdill raced to second in the 4x200 in 2:07.56. The 4x800 team of Claire Campbell, Sarah Gilbert, Carlie Manrose and Brooklen Black ran an 11:06.54 to take the second spot. The shuttle hurdle team of Claire Adkins, Riley Hunter, Kinghorn and Lydia Morales-Llan also took second, finishing in 1:22.11.
Shenandoah’s 1600 medley relay team of Adkins, Gilbert, Manrose and Godfread added a third-place run of 4:51.45.
Campbell, Adkins and Morales-Llan contributed fourth-place individual finishes for the Fillies. Campbell ran a 5:37.41 in the 1500 with Manrose five seconds behind her in fifth. Adkins ran an 18.78 in the 100 hurdles and Morales-Llan finished the 400 hurdles in 1:21.18.
Black added a sixth-place run in the 800.
“Everybody stepped up and did a nice job,” Shenandoah coach Jon Skillern said of his team’s performance. “Some of the freshmen are starting to figure some things out and they are all running well and working hard. The older kids are leading and the younger ones are following. They look good as a group.”
The Fillies travel to Creston, Monday, April 8 before hosting the Fillies Relays three nights later.
“Our goal is to get better each meet,” said Skillern, “and I’m not sure in every event we had something get better.”
Riley Jensen scored 25 of Essex’s 27 points. She won the high jump for the third time in as many meets, despite only clearing 4-8, five inches off her best showing of the season.
Jensen also placed second in the 200 in 28.88, third in the 400 in 1:07.62 and sixth in the 100.
“Riley loves track and has a lot of talent,” Essex coach Shawn Morse said. “We are still trying to figure out her (best) distances. She has been sprinting early, but in another meet or two we could transition into the (400 and 800). She looked good in the 400 (Thursday) running against air and ran pretty good in the 200.”
Sarah Madsen added a fifth-place run in the 200 for the Trojanettes.
While Duncan had a great night for the Cowgirls, others stepped up as well.
Jaden Daffer ran the 100 meter hurdles for the first time this season, and despite a late stumble earned the win in 17.44. Meyer said getting Daffer back from injury is big.
“We have been hit fairly hard by some minor injuries,” said Meyer. “(Daffer) won the 100 hurdles (Thursday). Not bad since it was the first time she ran them this year.”
The other win for the Cowgirls came in the 4x800 meter relay as Daffer, Camryn McClintock, Caitlyn Ward and Chay Ward raced to a time of 11:54.29.
The Cowgirls were also second in the 4x400 relay with Daffer, Olivia Larsen, McClintock and Harley Spurlock in a time of 4:41.04.
The Cowgirls placed third in the shuttle hurdle and 1600 medley relays and fourth in the 800 medley. Sidnie Baier, Daffer, Larsen, Danica Laumann, Makenna Laumann, Roxanna Snyder, Spurlock and Caitlyn Ward all ran in at least one of those relays.
Caitlynn Rasco finished third in the 3000 meter run in 14:50.54 and added a fifth-place run in the 1500 for the Cowgirls. Chay Ward took fifth in the 800.
