COUNCIL BLUFFS – The Sidney Cowboys gave up 12 runs in the second inning and ended their season with a 19-1 loss to Logan-Magnolia, Saturday, July 13 in a quarterfinal of the Class 1A District 14 Tournament.
The Cowboys went into the game without two starters. Garett Phillips didn’t play because of injury and Justis Hayes, who would have started the game on the mound, didn’t play because of another school-based commitment.
Brett Gruber started on the mound for the Cowboys and gave up five first inning runs. The first seven reached and scored for the Panthers in the second against Gruber, Zayne Osborn and then Jaden Sears. Colton Hanlon and Tre Melby homered as part of a 12-run frame that gave the Panthers a 17-1 lead.
They added two more in the third for the final margin.
The Panthers had 10 different players record at least one hit and nine score at least one run.
Osborn scored Sidney’s only run in the second inning. Will Oswald walked to start the inning, and then Osborn reached on a fielder’s choice. Osborn stole second, then third and finally home giving Sidney its only run.
Cole Stenzel had Sidney’s only hit against Panther pitcher Joel Richardson, a double in the first. Those were the only Cowboy runners in four innings. Richardson struck out seven.
Sidney’s first season under head coach Brad Johnson ended at 7-15. The Cowboys lose four seniors in Osborn, Sears, Hayes and Jackson Gorham.
Logan-Magnolia improved to 13-14 in advancing to a district semifinal.
