Adam Thompson, Sidney

Sidney senior Adam Thompson takes control of the 1600 meter run at the Fremont-Mills Relays, Tuesday, April 23.

TABOR – The Fremont-Mills girls and Sidney boys won the Fremont-Mills Co-ed Relays, Tuesday, April 23.

The Knights scored 136 points to take the team title, beating Southwest Valley by 19. Sidney was third with 102. Essex also competed, taking seventh with 26 points.

The Cowboys won quite comfortably with 165 points. The host Knights were second with 118. Essex took sixth with 26.

Sidney’s points were scored by several different athletes as the Cowboys easily won the meet despite not having top runners Noah Jorgenson and Mister McNaughton.

Adam Thompson won the 1600 in 4 minutes, 53.45 seconds and the 3200 in 10:34.87. He had a different teammate in the next spot in both races. Cole Jorgenson was second in the 1600 in 5:16.94 and Storm Barrett took second in the 3200 in 11:44.43.

Cole Hunt and Michael Benedict took the top two spots in the 400 for the Cowboys in 54.60 and 54.76. Jaden Sears added a win in the 800 in 2:11.52 with Starson Lovett taking third.

Benedict was also second in the 200 in 24.33.

Sidney’s throwers also scored big points. Thomas Wilson won the discus with a throw of 129 feet, 3 inches and added a fourth-place finish in the shot put. Brady Lorimor was second in both throws with distances of 115-1 and 43-6.

“The throwers set the tone,” said Sidney coach Donnie Sears. “That’s always an advantage. We did just enough along the way. We were scrambling all the way, but that’s a credit to the kids.”

Sidney won just one relay, taking the 4x800 with Hunt, Sears, Starson Lovett and Connery Humphries in 9:26.88.

The Cowboys added good points in all of the other relays, taking second in the 4x400, third in the 4x200, shuttle hurdle and both medleys and fourth in the 4x100.

Fremont-Mills did most of its work in the relays, winning five. Jaeger Powers, Austin Gartner, Connor Alley and Mason Vanatta took the 4x100 in 45.87. Colton Hauschild, Alley, James Switzer and Vanatta came back to win the 4x400 in 3:49.67. Powers, Hauschild, Switzer and Gartner won the shuttle hurdle in 1:03.67 and many of those same athletes won the 800 medley in 1:43.83 and the 1600 medley, which also included Nick Miramontes, in 3:54.37.

“I was happy with the relays we put together,” Knights coach Mike Wood said. “We have a nice small core of track athletes. I’m happy with the effort.”

The Knights added four individual wins in the field events and hurdles.

Gartner took the 110 hurdles in 16.26 and Switzer won the 400 hurdles in 59.97. Hauschild added a runner-up finish in the 400 hurdles in 1:02.38.

Powers won the long jump at 19-7.75 while Alley posted a meet record throw of 48-4 in the shot put.

“(Alley) has been fantastic,” said Wood. “He is so meticulous in what he works on. He can take the smallest instruction and turn that into extra inches in every throw.”

Essex scored 26 points with most of that coming from Colton Thornburg. He finished second in the 100 in 12.15 and long jump at 19-1. He added a third-place run in the 200.

“Colton was right there next to first place in all of them,” Trojans coach Matthew Quick said. “He’s going to continue to get better as we work toward conference and districts.”

Caden Henderson added a fourth-place run in the 3200 for the Trojans.

In the girls portion of the meet Fremont-Mills got off to its usual fantastic start in the field putting up 60 points. Kendra Fichter won both the shot put and discus. She threw the shot put 34-4 and the discus 117-1. Teammate Sophie Phillips was second in the discus and fourth in the shot put.

Kenna Howard added a win in the high jump, getting over 4-10. Teammate Rachel Wietzki was fourth.

Lydia Alley and Wietzki added second and third-place finishes in the long jump.

“Our field events have been strong for three or four years,” Fremont-Mills coach Kyle Fichter said. “We have been fortunate with our field events. We come out of the field with 50 plus points most meets. Our numbers on the track started to come down significantly (Tuesday). I’m pretty pleased with that.”

Those times on the track were led by the relays, showing the depth of this year’s team.

The Knights won just one relay, the shuttle hurdle with McKayla Gartner, Lydia Alley, Kenna Howard and Kendall Reed finishing in 1:12.40.

They were second in four other relays, the 4x100 in 55.85, 4x200 in 2:02.82, 4x400 at 4:54.06 and 800 medley in 2:05.83. Alley, Maddy Baker, Elizabeth Bartles, Gartner, Lexie Howard, Malea Moore, Taylor Morgan, Rachel Wietzki and Kaylee Wright were all part of at least one of the runner-up relays.

The Knights also finished third in the 1600 medley relay.

Reed took second in the 100 hurdles in a time of 17.68.

Coach Fichter said it was a good night.

“It’s always the goal to win the home meet,” said Fichter, “and put on a good show for the home crowd. We haven’t found the right combinations all year, but (Tuesday) they worked.”

Maddy Duncan had another big night to lead the Cowgirls. She won the 100 meter dash in 13.32, the 400 in 1:02.87 and the long jump in 16-3.75. She also anchored the winning 4x100 meter relay. Jaden Daffer, Olivia Larsen and Makenna Laumann got the baton to Duncan for a finish in 55.13.

Daffer added a win in the 100 hurdles, finishing in 17.10.

Daffer also led off the winning 4x400 meter relay. She was joined by Larsen, Faith Brumbaugh and Roxanna Snyder, finishing in 4:46.02.

The Cowgirls also won the 4x800 and 1600 medley relays. Chay Ward, Caitlynn Rasco, Brumbaugh and Danica Laumann completed the 4x800 in 11:56.94. Laumann, Snyder, Camryn McClintock and Harley Spurlock finished first in the medley in 5:14.88.

Sidney was also third in the 800 medley and 4x200 meter relays.

Donnie Sears also coaches the girls and said his group his work to do in the next week if they are going to keep their conference win streak alive at the conference meet, but he’s not counting them out.

“We’re 34 points off of F-M,” said Sears. “(Alice de Froment) wasn’t here and she’s a big part of the sprints. Caitlyn Ward was golfing and she’ll change a place or two. Fremont-Mills is so good. They get double digit points in each (field event) and when they have that kind of lead stepping on the track, you have to take care of your business and (get some help).”

Sears also mentioned Griswold as a contender for next week’s conference title.

Riley Jensen scored all 26 of Essex’s points. She won the 800 in 2:49.75, and placed second in the 400 at 1:07.19 and the high jump at 4-10.

“She competed well in both her 400 and 800,” Essex coach Shawn Morse said, “I was pleased to see her not give up at the tape and fight for (her place). She was very competitive down the stretch in the 800.”

The Corner Conference meet will be hosted by Fremont-Mills again this season. It’s scheduled for Tuesday, April 30.
