ESSEX – The Essex/South Page Trojans scored double digit runs for the second time in as many games, but again lost as West Harrison earned a 22-12 win in five innings, Tuesday, June 4.

Trojan pitching walked 14 West Harrison batters as the Hawkeyes scored in every inning.

Essex/South Page stayed in striking distance for a while. The Hawkeyes scored five runs in the first inning without a hit against Trojan pitchers Tucker Hadden and Luke Dalley.

The Trojans answered with three runs in the home first. The first three batters walked, and then Quentin Thornburg singled in a pair of runs. Another walk and an error led to one more run scoring and the Trojans were within 5-3 after the first inning.

West Harrison scored six runs in the second inning on four hits and then four more scored in the third on one hit for a 15-3 lead.

Essex/South Page responded with six runs in the home third. After a groundout to start the inning, six straight Trojans reached base with Eli Drennen providing the only hit. After a strikeout, three more Trojans reached, including Thornburg driving in two more with a double.

West Harrison extended the lead to 21-9 in the top of the fourth, scoring six runs on four hits.

The Trojans scored three more times, though, in the home fourth. Hadden singled to start the inning. A walk, an error and a couple more Trojans reaching on a fielder’s choice allowed those runs to score.

The Hawkeyes added one in the top of the fifth and three straight Trojans struck out after a Jake Gray single in the bottom of the fifth, ending the game.

Thornburg ended with two hits and four RBIs to lead the Trojans. Gray singled and walked three times. Colton Thornburg also reached base on all four plate appearances, which included a second inning double.

The loss dropped the Trojans to 0-2. They used five pitchers with Dalley and Caden Henderson both able to get more than three outs.

The top four Hawkeyes in the batting order drove in three runs each and scored a total of 10 times as they improved to 3-1. The Hawkeyes have scored 57 runs in their three wins.
