Fremont-Mills graduate and Northwest Missouri State sophomore linebacker Sam Phillips has been named the MIAA football Defensive Player of the Week.

Phillips started at linebacker for the Maryville school and scored two defensive touchdowns in the Bearcats’ 45-35 win at Missouri Western, Thursday, Sept. 5.

His brother, Spencer, who is a starting defensive lineman and also graduated from Fremont-Mills, recovered a fumble in the first quarter and then lateraled the ball to Sam for a 43-yard fumble return for a touchdown to start the scoring.

Sam added a 29-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter to give the Bearcats a 28-7 lead. He also had six tackles.

The Bearcats open the home portion of their season, Saturday, Sept. 14 at 1:30 against Washburn.
