Brooklen Black, Shenandoah

Shenandoah freshman Brooklen Black runs to third base during a Fillie with over Kuemper, Thursday, June 27.

COUNCIL BLUFFS – A pair of three-run innings was enough to give Shenandoah softball its 20th victory of the season, an 8-5 triumph over Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln, Monday, July 8.

The first big inning was the first. Delanie Voshell singled, Nichole Gilbert walked, and then Logan Hughes was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a strikeout, Natalie Gilbert singled in a run, Courtnee Griffin singled in another and Sara Morales drove in a run with a groundout.

The Lynx responded with two runs in the bottom of the first without a hit, but they wouldn’t score again until their final turn at the plate.

After two perfect innings by Lynx pitcher Holly Hansen, the Fillies scored three more runs in the fourth. Morales singled with one out and scored on Sidda Rodewald’s triple. Cayley Lorimor bunted her way on with Rodewald staying at third, and then both scored on Nichole Gilbert’s two-out single.

Lorimor singled and eventually scored on a passed ball in the sixth. McGinnis singled and then stole home in the seventh.

The Lynx cut Shenandoah’s six-run cushion in half in the final frame. Voshell and Nichole Gilbert hadn’t given up a hit through six innings, but Sydney McCorkle ended the no-hit bid with a one-out single in the seventh. Rilee Filip doubled, and then Jessica Vrenick drove in a run with a groundout. Brianna Schiller followed with an RBI double, and then Sierrah Beaman singled in another. Gilbert responded by inducing a groundout to end the game.

Voshell pitched the first four innings and gave up two runs, one earned, while walking seven and striking out five. Gilbert walked just one in the last three innings, but gave up four hits and three earned runs.

Lorimor finished with two of Shenandoah’s nine hits. She also scored twice as the Fillies finished the regular season with a 20-12 record.

Abraham Lincoln’s regular season ended with a 6-25 record.
