GRISWOLD – The Sidney Cowboys scored the game’s first seven runs in an 8-3 win over Griswold, Friday, June 21.
The Cowboys scored two runs in the second inning against Griswold starting pitcher Josh Brownlee. Zayne Osborn and Brett Gruber opened with singles. Brownlee retired the next three Cowboys, but Osborn and Gruber were both able to cross the plate.
Sidney left the bases loaded in the third inning without scoring, but was able to extend the lead with a five-run fourth. Justis Hayes opened with a single. Jackson Gorham and Cale Phillips both walked with one out. Garett Phillips followed with a two-run double. After a strikeout, Will Oswald homered for the first time this season to add to the Cowboy lead.
Gruber doubled in Oswald in the seventh with the final Cowboy run of the game.
Griswold scored single runs against Hayes in the fourth and sixth innings and then against Gruber in the seventh.
Phillips and Gruber led the Cowboy offense with two hits each. Oswald scored twice and drove in three on the home run.
Hayes gave up just two hits in six innings, but also two walks and two runs, one earned. He struck out eight.
The Cowboys improved to 4-9 with a win that ended their four-game losing streak. They are 4-4 in the Corner Conference.
Griswold lost its sixth straight to fall to 1-12 overall and 1-7 in the conference.
