PETERSEN, JOHN

John E. Petersen 1965-2019 John Eric Petersen, son of Robert Eugene and Paula Elaine (Graham) Petersen, was born on September 28, 1965 at Annapolis, Maryland. He entered into eternal rest on Monday, May 6, 2019 at his rural Essex home following a long battle with cancer at the age of 53 years, 7 months, 8 days. During his early life, with his father in the military, the family lived in various locations around the country. Those locations included Bladensburg, MD, Adak, AK, London, England, Virginia Beach, VA, Hamburg, IA, Shenandoah, IA and lastly Council Bluffs, IA. John eventually planted roots in Essex, Iowa. He attended various elementary schools and later attended Shenandoah High School before graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs with the Class of 1983. John attended Drake University for one year. On December 10, 1991, John was united in marriage to Alice F. Reed at Red Oak, Iowa. To this union one son, Troy Eugene Petersen, was born. Following their marriage they lived in Shenandoah and eventually moved to Essex, where John built their country home in 1997. John was a self employed carpenter. Among the things that John enjoyed in his spare time were gardening, fishing and hunting. Thanks to those who visited, brought food, sent cards and offered help. Special thanks to kind neighbors, Peg and John Carlson and friend, Steve Russell. Preceding John in death were his wife, Alice Reed Petersen; sister, Susan Petersen; and his maternal and paternal grandparents. Left to cherish his memory are his son, Troy Eugene Petersen of Essex, IA; father, Robert E. Petersen of Essex, IA; mother, Paula E. Petersen of Shenandoah; and sister, Patricia Johnson of Atlanta, GA; aunt, Ida Brown; other relatives and many friends. A memorial graveside service will be held at a later date. Professional arrangements are under the direction of Nishna Valley Funeral and Cremation Service in Shenandoah.
