HOLMES, MARY LOU

Mary Lou Holmes 1945 - 2019 Mary Lou Holmes, was born on October 28, 1945 in Red Oak, Iowa, the only girl of five children of Joseph Curtly and Helen Frances (Allender) Mirts. She grew up on a farm near Coburg, Iowa, attended school in Coburg through the 8th grade, and was a graduate from the Red Oak High School. On February 11, 1967, Mary Lou and Wayne Clifford Holmes were united in marriage at the United Methodist Church in Red Oak. They were blessed with two sons, Brian and Mark. A busy mother and farm wife, Mary Lou helped with field work and livestock, raising cattle, hogs, and sheep. She also helped her sons with their 4-H projects. Mary Lou was a member of the Norwich Social Hour and Emmanuel Lutheran Church where she volunteered to organize weddings held at the church. She enjoyed gardening, reading, play cards, especially bridge, and traveling. For 30 years, Mary Lou and Wayne avoided most of the Iowa snow and ice by spending the winter months in Apache Junction, Arizona. They enjoyed a trip to Alaska and traveling with Niehart Tours, visiting Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. Mary Lou was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and a good friend to all who knew her. On Thursday morning, September 26, 2019, Mary Lou entered into rest at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, at the age of 73 years, 10 months, and 28 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Gordon, Kenneth, and Glen Mirts; brother-in-law Robert Holmes; and sisters-in-law, Jeanette Mirts and Helen Holmes. Left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband of 52 years, Wayne Holmes of Shenandoah, IA; sons, Brian Holmes and wife Lisa of Shenandoah, and Mark Holmes and wife Sarah of Des Moines, IA; 5 grandchildren, Brianna, Adrianna and Evan Holmes of Shenandoah, and Gavin and Carson Holmes of Des Moines; brother Gene Mirts and wife Beverly of Red Oak; brother-in-law Gene Holmes of Shenandoah; sister-in-law Marilyn Holmes of Shenandoah; extended relatives; and a host of special friends. Celebration of life funeral services were held on Monday, September 30, 2019 at 10:30 am at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Shenandoah with Pastor Kurt Hoover officiating. Pastor Ray McCalla shared memories of Mary Lou. Special music was "How Great Thou Art", sung by Pam Lewis. The congregation sang "Amazing Grace" and "Beautiful Savior". Steve Richardson was organist. Casket bearers were Evan Holmes, Gavin Holmes, Carson Holmes, Craig Holmes, Darwin Holmes, Don Holmes, Charles McCalla and Jim McCalla. Honorary bearers were Ed McCalla, Jon Hallquist, Gene Mirts and Jim O'Hara. Registry attendants were Ginger McCalla and Kathy Harvey. Flower attendants were Cheryl Hallquist and Charlotte New. Serving as ushers were Tony Ballain and Ron Oestmann. Burial was in Shenandoah's Rose Hill Cemetery. The family greeted relatives and friends with visitation and viewing from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral Home. Memorials in Mary Lou's name are being directed to the Shenandoah Emmanuel Lutheran Church or DaVita Shenandoah Dialysis. Professional arrangements were under the direction of Nishna Valley Funeral and Cremation Service in Shenandoah.
