The staff of the Iowa DNR’s Nishnabotna Wildlife Unit are planning to complete large prescribed burns at several sites in Fremont and MillsCounties this spring and following fall/winter.
The areas they plan to potentially burn at include the Riverton, LakeShawtee, Auldon Bar, Draper Bottoms, Botna Bottoms, Copeland Bend, Eli Slusher, M. U. Payne, O. S. Wing, Possum Hollow, and Cooper Creek Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) in FremontCounty. There may also be burns at Willow Slough, NoddlemanIsland, and St. Mary’s Island WMAs in MillsCounty.
Residents that are located as far as 3 miles from these prescribed burns could be affected by smoke. If anyone has health conditions that could be impacted by smoke around these areas in Fremont and MillsCounties, please contact biologist Matt Dollison at (712) 350-0147 so the wildlife staff can ensure that necessary precautions are taken.
